Located on the Main River, Mittenberg is a lower Franconian village notable for the many beautifully preserved half-timbered houses, spanning the 15th to 17th centuries, that line its main street. Its history actually dates back to the Roman Empire when it had settlements there dating back to 100 A.D.
There are a number of historical buildings, including an inn that is one of the oldest in Germany, dating back to 1590. It is now a hotel at which many famous people have stayed, including Elvis Presley.
Mittenburg Castle, a small 16th century fortress, sits high on a hill overlooking the village.
A 19th century church is another feature, as are many striking half-timber variations.
Hard to imagine anyplace that will be more picturesque than Mittenberg–can’t wait to find out…next stop: Wurzburg
